Mario Balotelli will miss Wednesday's Manchester derby after accepting the red card he was handed in Manchester City's 2-0 victory at West Brom.

However, the former Inter Milan star, who scored both his team's goals at The Hawthorns, has appealed against the three-game ban he has been subjected to.

A brief statement on City's official website read:"We have today submitted an appeal following the dismissal of Mario Balotelli for violent conduct during Sunday's 2-0 victory at West Bromwich Albion.

"The claim will be heard by an FA independent regulatory commission on Tuesday."

The FA then confirmed: "Manchester City have submitted a claim that, following the dismissal of Mario Balotelli for violent conduct, the standard punishment of an automatic three-match suspension is clearly excessive."

City boss Roberto Mancini had confirmed after Sunday's game that he would be appealing against the red card, when he said:"Mario was excellent because he scored two fantastic goals, defended and worked very hard for the team.

"I don't agree with the referee's decision to send him off at all – it was not a red card in my opinion and we will now consider whether we should appeal the decision."

Balotelli has endured a mixed time at Eastlands following his summer switch from Italy.
