Hendy Springer, the former Barbados offspinner, has been appointed assistant coach of West Indies for the Champions Trophy. His appointment comes after John Dyson was sacked as coach, a position which will be filled by David Williams.”It is always an honour to represent the West Indies in any capacity and I am looking forward to the assignment,” Springer said. “This is another chance for me to help with the development of West Indies cricket.”Springer and Williams – now the team’s coach – had coached West Indies during the 2007 tour of Zimbabwe, and both were Dyson’s deputies on the trip to South Africa that followed. Springer has also worked with the West Indies A team and is Director of Coaching at the Barbados Cricket Association.The West Indies squad, missing its leading players because of their tussle with the board, reached South Africa on Monday. They will undergo an eight-day camp in Potchefstroom to prepare for the tournament which starts on September 22.”The players have put in a lot of hard work [over the last week] and I want to see them playing to their full potential,” he said. “After we arrive in South Africa, we have another two weeks before the start of the tournament, and that will give us more opportunities to get acclimatised and ready for the challenge ahead.”West Indies open their Champions Trophy campaign against Pakistan on September 22. India and Australia are the other teams in their group.
